ENS (EARLY NEUROLOGICAL STIMULATION)

ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) begins at day 3 through day 16. This is a period believed to be a time of rapid neurological growth and development. Research shows that slight struggles and stresses in small doses are actually good for puppies and will help them grow into strong, healthy well-adjusted adults. The process consists of 5 simple and harmless exercises, which are: tactile stimulation(tickling between the toes), lying in the supine position (on their back), held with head up, held tilted upside down, and thermal stimulation(wet towel). Benefits include improved heart rate; stronger heart beats; stronger adrenal glands; more tolerance to stress; and greater resistance to disease.

SOCIALIZATION

Early socialization is key! Even though our puppies are loved and handled from birth, the critical socialization period is between 3 and 14 weeks when they are most receptive. We gently and carefully expose the babies to a variety of textures, sounds, objects and people starting when their eyes open. The key is to make the experiences positive & fun and encourage exploration without overwhelming or frightening them. This not only builds their confidence, but it also help to prevent fear based behaviors as adults. Needless to say, we have so many close family and friends that line up to come visit new litters and the grandkids cannot get enough of them! The best compliment that I hear over and over when the puppies go home is that they are so social & affectionate. It is very important to continue to safely socialize your puppy after you take it home.

GROOMING DESENSITIZATION

The Bordoodle breed will likely have a very low to non-shedding coat that will require regular grooming and maintenance. Some choose to have their dogs clipped short to prevent matting and their face, feet and privates will need regular trims to stay tidy and clean. Most of the puppies also love and desire to be outdoors, so regular baths may be necessary, too. (Not to mention nail trims and cleaning those poodle type ears.) This is why it is so important for the puppies to be desensitized to things like clippers, blow dryers and nail grinders. I trim nails as early as 2 weeks to prevent them from scratching mommy's tender belly when they nurse and continue to trim their nails weekly. I also slowly expose them to the sound and vibration of clippers and the blow dryer beginning around 4 - 5 weeks old along with baths at 6, 7 & 8 weeks. Again, it is so important to continue this when your puppy comes home so that grooming is stress free.
